Why this gateway?

The A2 reaches the Ewaso Nyiro reserve cluster here, placing gates, supplies, and the onward road to Marsabit in one useful northern staging point.

Wildlife & landscape

Arid plains, acacia scrub, rocky outcrops, and doum-palm river corridors support elephant and northern dryland species including Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and beisa oryx.

When to go

Dry periods often draw wildlife toward the river, while rains change wildlife distribution and the condition of reserve tracks.

Getting there

Drive north from Nanyuki through Timau and Isiolo. Archer's Gate is the principal entrance to Samburu National Reserve; Buffalo Springs and Shaba use separate access in Isiolo County.

Typical visit

Allow several nights if combining the three reserves; Samburu and Buffalo Springs are contiguous, while Shaba is a separate eastern outing.
