Why visit this place?

Samburu reveals how dramatically Kenya's landscapes change north of Mount Kenya. The Ewaso Nyiro River sustains a green corridor through otherwise dry country, drawing elephants, predators, birds and species adapted to the northern plains. The reserve is compact enough for its river, rocky hills, open savannah and wildlife relationships to become legible during an unhurried visit, while also forming part of the larger Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba ecosystem.

What to expect

Expect hot, open country; dusty game-drive tracks; rocky outcrops; acacia woodland; and denser vegetation beside the river. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and distances inside the reserve can make a full-day visit more useful than a hurried circuit. The County Government describes the main route network as generally passable but warns that washboard surfaces and changing conditions occur. Entry procedures, vehicle arrangements and gate conditions should be confirmed before arrival.

Enter early when the air is cooler, carry more drinking water than you expect to need, and give the river corridor time instead of rushing between sightings. Ask gate staff or a knowledgeable local operator about current track conditions and recent wildlife movement. Remain inside the vehicle where required, never feed or crowd animals, and ask permission before photographing local people.

Getting there

From Nanyuki, follow the A2 north through Timau and Isiolo to Archer's Post. The main Archer's Gate is a few kilometres off the highway; the map point marks that practical entrance. Isiolo is the last major town for fuel and supplies before the final approach. Confirm the current gate, admission, payment and vehicle requirements with Samburu County or a reliable local operator before setting out.

Best time: Early morning and later afternoon generally bring cooler conditions, while the middle of the day can be intensely hot. Drier periods may concentrate wildlife closer to the Ewaso Nyiro River; rain can transform the landscape and make some tracks slower or muddy. Conditions vary, so verify the roads and reserve arrangements near the date of travel.
