Mount Satima, also known as Ol Donyo Lesatima, rises to 4,001 metres above the northern Aberdare moorland. It is the highest summit in the Aberdare Range and Kenya's third-highest mountain, reached through a landscape of open tussock, giant highland plants, volcanic formations and fast-moving cloud.

The summit completes the landscape first revealed at Dragon's Teeth. Instead of a technical rock climb, the northern approach crosses an immense high moorland where the altitude, distance and changing weather create the challenge. In clear conditions, the summit opens views across the Aberdare Range and toward Mount Kenya; in mist, the mountain feels remote even when the trail appears close to its goal.

What to expect
From Dragon's Teeth, the mapped continuation is approximately 3.5 kilometres one way. The trail generally rises across open moorland rather than technical terrain, but it reaches about 4,000 metres and can include mud, boggy sections, cold rain, strong wind and very limited visibility. There are no dependable supplies or shelter at the summit. The full outing from Twin Rocks and back is roughly 16 kilometres and must be treated as a serious high-altitude day.

Think of the summit as the midpoint, not the finish. Begin early, turn around when the agreed time or conditions require it, and keep enough food, treated water, warm waterproof clothing and energy for the return through Dragon's Teeth. A knowledgeable local guide is strongly recommended because cloud can hide landmarks and several moorland junctions are not obvious.

Getting there
The Across route reaches Mount Satima in stages: Nyeri to Rhino Gate and Twin Rocks by vehicle, Twin Rocks to Dragon's Teeth on foot, and then a further mapped 3.5-kilometre walk to the summit. The combined trail from Twin Rocks is about 8 kilometres one way. Confirm the active gate, park entry, guide or ranger requirements, road condition and closing rules with Kenya Wildlife Service or a reliable local operator before setting out.
Typical visit: 10.0 hours
Best time: An early start offers the best margin for the long return and may provide clearer morning conditions, but the summit can cloud over rapidly in any season. Favor a stable forecast, confirm recent rain and road conditions, and postpone the summit when visibility, wind or access advice is unfavorable.
