Why visit this place?

Kenya Wildlife Service describes Karuru as a roughly 300-metre, three-stage waterfall, making it one of the defining natural landmarks of the Aberdares. The journey crosses cultivated highlands, montane forest and open moorland before the river disappears into a deep gorge. The scale, changing weather and relative remoteness make the approach as memorable as the final view.

What to expect

This is a full-day national-park outing rather than a roadside stop. Expect gate procedures, long stretches of unpaved internal road, cold or wet highland weather and limited services near the falls. Viewing access and permitted trails depend on current park conditions and staff guidance; the mapped point is approximate and does not imply access to the base or edge of the waterfall.

Confirm the active gate, park fees, ranger or guide requirements and internal-road conditions with Kenya Wildlife Service before leaving Nyeri. Start early, use a suitable high-clearance vehicle when conditions require it, and carry warm waterproof layers, food and more treated water than you expect to need. Keep well back from exposed edges and return with ample daylight.

Getting there

The mapped Journey leaves the Nyeri Home Base and follows the OpenStreetMap road network into Aberdare National Park toward the Karuru Falls viewing area. Gate choice, road permission and the final approach can change, especially after rain. Treat the map as orientation only and follow the route approved by park staff on the day of travel.

Typical visit: 8.0 hours

Best time: Begin early in any season so there is time for entry, slow park roads and the return before closing. Rain may strengthen the waterfall but can also make internal roads muddy or impassable, while mist can hide the view. Check recent weather and park access conditions immediately before the journey.
