Gura Falls

Nature

Aberdare National Park, Nyeri County, Kenya

A high waterfall plunging into one of the Aberdares' deep forested gorges opposite the Karuru waterfall system.

Why go

Why visit this place?

Gura Falls makes the scale of the Aberdare water catchment visible. Cloud, forest, moorland streams, and a sudden gorge converge here, forming a dramatic counterpart to nearby Karuru Falls.

When you arrive

What to expect

Reaching the falls is a national-park Journey, not a conventional roadside visit. Expect gate formalities, variable mountain weather, rough internal roads, wildlife, and a viewing route determined by current Kenya Wildlife Service conditions.

Local knowledge

Local tip

Confirm Kiandongoro Gate and the permitted route with KWS before departure. Use a capable vehicle when advised, carry warm and wet-weather layers, and keep well back from gorge edges.

Visiting

Getting there

The mapped Journey runs from Nyeri through Kiandongoro Gate and toward the Gura Falls area. Entry, internal-road access, guiding, and the final viewpoint must be reconfirmed with KWS.

Typical visit: 6.0 hours

Best time: Start early and plan to exit before the park gate closes. Heavy rain, mist, wildlife movement, or road conditions can change the day's route.
