Why visit this place?

Chinga Dam brings landscape, memory, and present-day life together. The reservoir was excavated by hand during the Emergency as punishment for Mau Mau detainees. Today it also supports fishing, water supply, farming, birdlife, and local boat activity, making it a place where history remains visible inside a living community landscape.

What to expect

This is a working community reservoir rather than a standardized visitor attraction. A local guide may be able to explain the dam, its fishery and waterbirds, and arrange a boat ride when conditions permit. Across the road, a short informal path descends through vegetation toward Chinga Waterfall.

Pause in Gichiche Centre to ask about the current access point, food, local conditions, and a guide for the waterfall. Bring a warm layer: the highland weather can feel unexpectedly cold. Never enter the water or use a boat without local permission, a suitable life jacket, and clear safety arrangements.

Getting there

Travel about 26 km south from Nyeri through Othaya and Gichiche. The Journey reaches the public dam access area; confirm the exact lakeside entry and any boat or waterfall plans locally.

Best time: Visit in daylight and allow extra time after rain. Confirm road conditions, boat availability, water level, and the waterfall path before leaving Nyeri.
