The park is explored on foot: a demanding climb reaches the crater rim, where hikers can look across the volcanic landscape toward Lake Naivasha and continue around the rim if time, weather and fitness allow.

What to expect
Kenya Wildlife Service describes a rugged walking landscape with no roads on the mountain itself. Expect a sustained, exposed ascent on stony and sometimes loose ground. Reaching the first rim is only part of the effort; walking farther around the crater adds substantial climbing and should be attempted only with enough daylight, water and energy for the return. Heat, wind, cloud or rain can change the difficulty, and wild animals may be present within the park.

Begin near opening time rather than starting under the midday sun. Carry all the drinking water and food you will need, wear footwear with reliable grip, and bring sun protection, a light rain layer and basic first-aid supplies. Ask at the gate about current trail and wildlife conditions before deciding whether to stop at the first rim or continue farther around the crater. Turn back early if weather, footing or fatigue begins to reduce your safety margin.

From the Naivasha Home Base, travel south toward the Naivasha–Mai Mahiu corridor and follow the local approach to the Kenya Wildlife Service main gate; the map point marks that entrance. KWS places the park about 90 kilometres from Nairobi by the Nairobi–Nakuru highway. Entry and payment arrangements can change, so confirm them through the official KWS service before leaving and do not rely on being able to resolve them after arriving at the gate.
Typical visit: 6.0 hours
Best time: An early start provides cooler climbing conditions and the largest daylight margin. KWS currently lists gate hours of 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM and describes the park as accessible throughout the year, but heat, rain, wind and cloud can change the trail quickly. Confirm current opening, entry and trail conditions shortly before visiting.
