Expect an active and sometimes crowded shoreline rather than a quiet resort jetty. Independent operators offer rides of different lengths and routes, so wildlife sightings, prices and the exact experience vary. Hippos are wild and dangerous; a responsible captain will keep a safe distance and change the route when animals, wind, rain or water conditions require it.

Before boarding, agree on the total price, duration, route and whether the ride is private or shared. Use an experienced local operator, wear the provided life jacket throughout the trip and never ask a captain to approach hippos closely. Avoid walking beside the water after dark, when hippos may leave the lake to graze.

Getting there

From Naivasha, follow the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu-Limuru Road and turn onto Moi South Lake Road toward Karagita. The mapped Journey ends at the public beach and main boat-launch area, about 7 kilometres from the Home Base. Local traffic and the final approach can make the short trip slower than the distance suggests.

Best time: Early morning often brings calmer water, softer light and active birdlife. Conditions matter more than a fixed schedule: do not go onto the lake in unsafe wind, rain or poor visibility, and accept a local captain's decision to delay or change a trip.
