Fort Jesus
Fort Jesus stands on a coral-rock spur between Mombasa Old Town and the Indian Ocean. Built by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596, the fort later passed through Omani Arab, Swahili and British control; its surviving walls now hold a museum and more than four centuries of Indian Ocean history.
Shimba Hills National Reserve
A coastal highland reserve where forest, grassland, elephants, sable antelope, and wide Indian Ocean views rise just inland from Mombasa.
