Lake Chala feels hidden until the crater opens below the rim. Its volcanic shape, shifting color, dry surroundings, and cross-border geography make it one of the Kilimanjaro region's most distinctive landscapes—and a natural counterpart to the Kenyan approach already reached from Taveta.

What to expect
The Tanzanian approach follows a signed gravel road to an established visitor area on the western side. Access, fees, trails, water activities, and operating arrangements can change, and the crater rim and descent should never be treated as unrestricted terrain.

Contact the operating access point before leaving Marangu. Follow all on-site instructions and do not swim, descend, hike, canoe, or kayak unless that activity is currently permitted and supervised.

Getting there
From Marangu, return to Himo, follow A23 toward Holili, and turn onto the signed gravel Lake Chala road. The mapped Journey is about 25 km and ends at the established western access area.
