Cape Coast

Cape Coast, Central Region, Ghana

Cape Coast is a living coastal city and the clearest base for Cape Coast Castle and the rainforest at Kakum. Its seafront geography asks for time and care: the city is both an everyday community and a place of difficult global history. Stay here to give the castle's history the attention it deserves and to make a separate journey inland to Kakum, rather than compressing coast and rainforest into a rushed stop. Fante is an important language here alongside English and other Ghanaian languages.
