Place

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Nature

Nossob and Auob valleys, Southern Kalahari, South Africa

A South Africa-Botswana conservation landscape of red dunes, dry riverbeds, sparse camel-thorn savanna, pans, and great distances.

Why go

Why visit this place?

Kgalagadi makes aridity itself legible: wildlife concentrates along fossil river valleys and pans rather than a wet savanna system.

When you arrive

What to expect

Slow gravel and sand roads, few services, large temperature swings, long sightlines, and wildlife sightings that remain unpredictable.

Local knowledge

Local tip

Plan each internal move around gate hours and official travel times rather than ordinary road distance. Night driving is not permitted.

Visiting

Getting there

Twee Rivieren/Two Rivers is the principal southern entry. The Nossob and Auob river roads form the main visitor corridors.

Best time: January to April brings irregular summer rain and intense heat; winter nights can fall below freezing even when days are mild.
