Place

Tsavo West National Park

Nature

Tsavo West, Taita Taveta County, Kenya

A vast volcanic wilderness of lava flows, springs, open savannah, wildlife, and layered railway and wartime history west of the Nairobi–Mombasa road.

Why go

Why visit this place?

Tsavo West is not one sight but an immense connected landscape. Mzima Springs, lava, viewpoints, rhino habitat, wildlife corridors, and First World War history reward a slower understanding of how water and geology shape this otherwise dry country.

When you arrive

What to expect

The park is too large to treat as a quick stop. Roads, gates, and distances determine what is realistic in a day, and the Maktau entrance reaches a different sector from Mtito Andei or the Amboseli connection.

Local knowledge

Local tip

Choose a realistic sector and turnaround point before entering. Carry water and sufficient fuel, stay on established roads, remain in the vehicle except in designated areas, and follow current KWS guidance.

Visiting

Getting there

From Taveta, follow the A23 east toward Maktau and enter through the signed Maktau Gate. The mapped approach is about 51 km; travel inside the park requires substantial additional time.

Typical visit: 8.0 hours

Best time: Plan a full daylight day. KWS currently lists normal day-visitor gate hours of 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM; verify fees, road conditions, and the chosen gate before leaving Taveta.
