Tamale

Tamale, Northern Region, Ghana

Tamale is northern Ghana's principal urban and transport base, with contemporary art, craft traditions, markets and a strong regional identity. Domestic flights and the national road network make it the practical transition between southern Ghana and the long road toward Mole. Pause here for the city itself before continuing west. Tamale should not be reduced to a transfer point: its cultural places and Dagbani-speaking setting make the northern journey intelligible. Dagbani is central in Tamale, within a multilingual northern region where other languages are also spoken.
