iSimangaliso Wetland Park
Nature
Elephant Coast, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
A long protected landscape of estuaries, lakes, wetlands, dunes, coastal forest, savanna, reefs, and ocean along northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Why go
Why visit this place?
Its connected freshwater, estuarine, terrestrial, and marine habitats make the Elephant Coast legible as one ecological system.
When you arrive
What to expect
A 220-kilometer park made of distinct sections, gates, roads, wetlands, beaches, and protected marine areas rather than one compact reserve.
Local knowledge
Local tip
Choose the park section before setting out; reaching one entrance does not create an internal road to every other section.
Visiting
Getting there
St Lucia is the southern gateway. Sodwana Bay and Kosi Bay are separate northern access areas reached through the public-road network.
Best time: Rain, water levels, marine conditions, turtle nesting, whale movement, and gate times affect different habitats at different times.
