Point Lenana offers the exhilaration of reaching one of Africa’s great high-altitude summits without the technical climbing required for Mount Kenya’s higher peaks, Batian and Nelion. The journey is as memorable as the destination, passing through forests, moorland and alpine terrain before the final ascent.

What to expect

Expect cold temperatures, strong winds, thin air and a steep, rocky final approach. The summit is small and exposed, and visibility can change quickly. Most visitors reach Point Lenana as the culmination of a carefully planned multi-day trek rather than as a casual day hike.

Local tip

Allow enough time to acclimatize and do not rush the ascent. Many hikers make the final climb before dawn, but weather and personal condition should determine whether it is safe to continue. Carry warm layers, gloves, rain protection, water, food, sun protection and a headlamp, and travel with experienced local support.

Getting there

Point Lenana can only be reached on foot within Mount Kenya National Park. The principal approaches are the Sirimon, Chogoria and Naro Moru routes. From the Nanyuki Home Base, Sirimon Gate provides the most direct starting point. The Across Sirimon Journey follows approximately 24 kilometres of trail through Old Moses Camp and Shipton’s Camp before reaching Point Lenana. Park admission and current access requirements should be confirmed with Kenya Wildlife Service before departure. Proper acclimatization, suitable mountain equipment and an experienced guide are strongly recommended.

Best time: Choose a period of relatively settled weather and check current mountain conditions before setting out. Rain, fog, high winds, ice and sudden temperature changes can occur at any time. Sunrise is a popular goal, but summit timing should always remain flexible when conditions are unsafe.
