Providence Island
Culture / history
Monrovia, Montserrado County, Liberia
At the mouth of the Mesurado River, Providence Island holds more than one beginning. Long before repatriate settlers arrived, the place known as Dozoa belonged to regional networks of trade, including the trade in enslaved people. It later became a landing place in Liberia’s settler history.
