Marsabit National Park

Nature

Marsabit, Marsabit County, Kenya

A cool montane oasis of forest, wildlife, and volcanic crater lakes rising unexpectedly above northern Kenya's arid plains.

Why go

Why visit this place?

Marsabit National Park turns the northern road Journey into a dramatic ecological transition. Dense highland forest and crater lakes support birds and mammals associated with both mountain and dry-country habitats. The park is also inseparable from the story of Ahmed, the great-tusked elephant protected by presidential decree and remembered as a symbol of Kenyan conservation.

When you arrive

What to expect

Expect a managed national-park visit on forest and crater roads, with mist, wildlife, viewpoints, and road conditions that can differ sharply from the dry A2 below. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Remain in the vehicle except in designated areas and leave enough time to exit before the evening gate closure.

Local knowledge

Local tip

Contact Kenya Wildlife Service before departure to confirm the best gate, current fees, internal-road condition, and whether high clearance or four-wheel drive is advisable. Carry drinking water, food, reserve fuel, binoculars, rain protection, and a first-aid kit.

Visiting

Getting there

The park has several gates. This local Journey maps the short approach from central Marsabit to Abdul Gate, which leads toward park headquarters. Entry fees apply; current KWS guidance lists daytime gate hours of 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM unless the visitor is staying overnight.

Typical visit: 7.0 hours

Best time: The park is accessible throughout the year, but rain and mist can make forest roads slower or hazardous. Begin early, confirm the day's conditions at the gate, and keep a generous margin before the 6:00 PM closure.
