Elmina

Elmina, Central Region, Ghana

Elmina is a distinct fishing city west of Cape Coast, shaped by its harbour, historic town and the imposing presence of St George's Castle. The community continues around the monument, so the waterfront is more than a backdrop to a heritage visit. Use Elmina as its own coastal base for the castle, harbour and town, with a short road link to Cape Coast rather than folding both communities into one anonymous destination. Fante is an important language here alongside English and other Ghanaian languages.
